What is SOOI?

 

The Mission

 

Snap Out Of IT (SOOI) was born out of a desire to counterbalance the contemporary trends of alienation, suppression and paranoia that have arisen in our culture as a result of the fear-cultivating policies of the US Government and the limitations imposed on public behavior by profit-driven corporations.  Rather than spin out conspiracy theories about how much we have to fear and how little control we have, SOOI strives proactively to co-create and nurture the idea of a Benevolent Conspiracy.  This Benevolent Conspiracy has the effect of spreading the opposite of paranoia (sometimes called "pronoia") -- a perception paradigm where one suspects that there are forces in society (and nature itself) that are wholly concerned with and committed to our happiness and well-being.

 

For the past two years, SOOI has been developing methods and initiating actions intended to transform our experience of public spaces in the San Francisco Bay area.  We aim to create a deepened sense of connection among people and an expanded sense of the possibilities available for community expression.  At a SOOI event, we deploy a group of catalytic "paraformers" who blend in with the normal activity of a particular space, then emerge by adopting a new activity that gives permission to others to expand their behavioral options.  The intended result is dissolution of the us/them dichotomy and an awakening of joy, amazement, inspiration, personal power and gratitude for being alive.
